For anyone not aware, THIS is the problem with Sunderland FC employing Paulo Di Canio as manager. There is even more context than most people realise. He used to perform these salutes when he played for Lazio, a club that, on the basis of its followers, is known informally as Nazio, as the the lowest of the low. Di Canio was expressing solidarity, inciting his fascist brethren.

Right-wing sectarianism

Sectarianism is bemoaned on the left. Too many socialist parties not enough socialists. Everyone's sectarian, except me. You get the picture?

It's interesting, actually, but there is a proliferation of groups on the right as well, much less commented on. The breakdown of the Tories popular base is well documented. The decline of Toryism is covered, for now, by the convergence of the mainstream parties. The Lib Dems support the current government and the Labour party doesn't really oppose it. The general logjam in our society stems from the fact all significant civil society groups are, in some way, tied up with the mainstream parties.

The breakdown is also occurring on the right. There is the UKIP which currently has around 10% support in opinion polls. It will take many hard Tory votes but unless something very odd happens it won't win any seats at the next general election however. There is the NF, the BNP and the British Freedom party on the fascist right, the BFP is a splinter from the BNP, which in was a split from the NF. In street fighting of course the Infidels have are a split from the EDL. From the sublime to the ridiculous, former Sun editor Kelvin McKenzie has suggested forming a Southern Party to represent, well, people like him living in and around London.

The continual breakdown of political formations possibly lends credence to the idea of petty caesarism as the dominant force in modern politics.

Anti-fascism in action.

The EDL were unable to hold a rally in Walthamstow today. This may have been something to do with it. Direct action by 3,000 anti-fascists. Great day, everyone, a great day.

Breivik

Anders Breivik has been found to be mentally competant during the vicious rampage he carried out last year. He wanted to be judged sane, and smiled when the verdict was announced. Despite the urge to confound the nazi bastard, it is right that he has been judged responsible for his crimes.

Now begins the job of making sure something like this never happens again. It starts with why it happened in the first place.

Breivik is a fascist (amply demonstrated here). That was his motive behind killing 77 innocent, defenceless people, many of them children. Judging him criminally insane would have depoliticised the atrocity, turned him into the 'lone wolf' he is sometimes portrayed as. Even if he somehow managed to fund, plan and carry out his atrocity all by himself (he didn't) Breivik emerged out of an environment of mainstream racism and bigotry, which, on its fringes, has grown ever more violent (in rhetoric) as the years have passed. Breivik simply transformed words into action.

We must take on the racists and the fascists wherever they emerge. In Britain they are currently gathered round the EDL, an organisation Breivik says he admires. On September 1st the EDL want to riot in Walthamstow. Be there to stop them.

Oopsie! That nazi moment...

Or: laughing at nazis when they fuck up. Voula Papachristou, racist Greek triple-jumper is “very bitter and upset” about her exclusion from the Olympics for her Nile Fever ‘joke’ on Twitter, subsequently deleted. Check this quote out, a perfect example of modern racism expressed. It’s less white-supremacism more arch victimhood:
"I have not slept at all and to be honest I am still trying to come to terms with what has happened. I am trying to stay calm otherwise I would lose control. I am thankful to my coach and family and so many other people who have stuck by me.
"After so many years of hurt and sacrifices to try and get to my first Olympics I am very bitter and upset. But what has upset me the most is the excessive reaction and speed of the disciplinary decision”.
Boo-fucking-hoo! She says she has never got involved in politics but has been involved enough to retweet posts from the woman-beating nazi, Illias Kasidiaris. At one stage she even wished him (via Twitter) all the best on his saints' day. This was also later deleted: it’s almost like she knew there was something wrong, you know? Question: who on Earth could Kasidiaris patron saint be? Some awful cross between Joseph Goebbels and Jackie Gleason. One of these days, Alice…!
Papachristou’s bitterness extends to the Greek government’s sport programme (or lack of it):
“We have zero support from the state," she said. "There are a lot of things that people do not know about, such as the unacceptable conditions in which we have to train.
"For example, there is no heating and no hot water even to take a shower in winter, no air conditioning in the summer and squalid training facilities and equipment in a state of disrepair.
"These are just the tip of the iceberg without mentioning the financial side and how we have been affected by massive cuts in state-funding for sport."
Now, for all this to make some logical sense you’d have to assume Papachristou thinks Africans run the country. But this is racism we’re dealing with, and racism and logic were always ships in the night.

Alleged master race on tour...

The English Defence League, bringing their unique charm to Dewsbury (well done to all those who opposed them, btw). Look at them, displaying their 'genuine concerns' about immigration. No wonder Ed Milliband is after their vote.

In case you forgot...

The Breivik trial lumbers on. Yesterday there was a psychological report. It turns out Breivik had a troubled childhood. He was aggressive and withdrawn, lacking in spontaneity and elements of joy and pleasure, appearing to avoid emotional contact. He now suffers delusions of grandeur and an inflated sense of his own self-importance...

Yes, and fascism. Got to get that in there somewhere: THE FASCISM.

Spot the nazi

Greek police are unable to find the fascist MP Ilias Kasidiaris, who is wanted for assaulting two women on live television. Greek police are unable to find the prominent fascist MP Ilias Kasidiaris. Greek police are unable to find the prominent fascist MP Ilias Kasidiaris, who until recently acted as a public spokesman for the Golden Dawn party. Greek police are unable to find the prominent fascist MP Ilias Kasidiaris, who until recently acted as a public spokesman for the Golden Dawn party, and presumably has a place of residence, and list of friends and associates, whom he may also be staying with.

In other news half of Greek police officers polled recently said they voted for Golden Dawn.

Be afraid...

That's the message from Greek nazi leader Nikolaos Michaloliakos:

"Greece is only the beginning," Michaloliakos shouted. "You know exactly what I mean."
The party's principal idea is to rid Greece of all "illegal immigrants".
"Out of my country, out of my home! How will we do it? Use your imagination..."

Indeed. But why be afraid, bloodcurdling rhetoric and threats (like - Kommt Zeit, kommt Rat, kommt Attentat) aside, of a party that only gathers 7% of the national vote? Well, not long ago they could only count on nought point nothing of the Greek electorate. Of course fascists aren't interested in elections, only to use them to build support for building a street army, use your imagination.

The recent elections have been a disaster for the Greek and European ruling classes. There is a clear anti-austerity majority in Greece but, partly due to the vagiaries of the Greek electoral system (the party with the most votes gets 50 bonus seats - like some kind of gameshow), and partly due to the compromised Greek Labour party, which would certainly have to be part of any left-government, an anti-austerity government seems a long way off.

What's the solution, another round of elections? That hardly seems likely. One can never say there is no reformist solution in any situation, but it would require a massive U-turn from the European ruling class. If the Greeks successfully turn back the austerity programme (even after all the damage it has done to their society) their example could prove dangerously popular. This is only how it seems to me but the Greek left has all the support but none of the power. Without turning to extra-parliamentary action, its hard to see how they can wield power, either way, the right will give them all the blame. This is where the Golden Dawn could prove dangerous, just use your imagination.

Greece is now an anti-fascist issue.

The violent and weird world of fascism....

I said at the time (not to you, of course) that there was more than meets the eye about the Tottenham Court Road siege last Friday... AND THERE WAS. The man involved was the BNP's 2010 General Election candidate for Stevenage, Michael Green. This is him pictured shortly after the end of the siege. I don't know about you but he looks to be at least topless. One of the things he is charged with is making a bomb hoax; semi-naked? That's some power of suggestion...

But seriously: yet another loony connected with Britain's far right has been found guilty (or in this case caught red handed) of plotting and/or carrying out murder and mayhem. Will our mass media keep portraying these scum as lone wolf madmen whose violence is incidental to their afilliations?

Elsewhere in fascist violence, read this statement by Lewisham Anti-Racist Action (via Transpontine). Last Saturday fifteen nazis assaulted two socialist pensioners (what a brave and noble master-race!):

Two local  anti-racist pensioners  were viciously attacked and hospitalised  this Saturday by racist thugs who said they were part of a group known as ‘March For England’ which is  very closely linked to English Defence League (EDL) and the BNP. Andy Smith, a retired teacher and active in Lewisham Pensioners’ Forum and the NUT was viciously attacked as well as another local pensioner.

The attack appears to be in response  to a planned Unite Against  Fascism event  across south London  whose aim was to  discourage  people from voting for or supporting far-right racist parties in the forthcoming London assembly elections.  It  follows  the humiliation they received in last week’s ‘March For England’ Brighton demonstration where 1000 anti-racists succeeded  in reducing the far-right march to a miserable  and defeated mob.

The attack happened during a busy Saturday on Lewisham High Street whilst manning a regular campaign stall, one that has been active for over thirty years in Lewisham and an integral part of the local community. Shortly after 12pm the stall was thrown to the floor by an individual loitering in the area and according to witnesses, already there waiting for the local activists to arrive.

A group, taking photographs and staring menacingly at the activists started to gather near the clock tower. Before too long, they passed the stall en masse at which point an altercation began, with shouts and heckling from the racist group. In response to Islamophobic statements one pensioner approached them and received a vicious head-butt as an answer, throwing him to the ground . Another pensioner  intervened and was quickly surrounded, man-handled and flung to the floor receiving a knock to the head. Both had to receive medical treatment for their injuries.

Earlier in the morning a photographer was also attacked by the same group of racists and had reported the attack to Lewisham police station...

LARAG is arranging a coach from Lewisham to Luton next Saturday May 5th to join the counter-demonstration to the planned EDL march there.  Call 07508 633 045 to book a ticket.

That's a point! National anti-Fascist demo, Luton, Saturday, definitely, be there!

Fascism and anti-fascism: mini-roundup

The headline news is of course that one in five French are nazis, a grossly unfair observation no doubt, but a national fascist vote of 18-20% is a matter of shame, it is also a matter of urgency... we have been here before. It's often noted how the French left is weakned by a dogmatic attachment to Republican ideals, it has failed to tackle state-led islamophobia (although the Mélenchon campaign was maybe the start of something different). Could this also be a long-term result of half-hearted denazification, which was known in France as Epuration Legale, which saw many collaboration politicians and civil servants granted amnesty under the Fourth and Fifth Republics? Whatever the background, the French labour movement is capable of making sharp upturns, even scoring major victories. This can be turned around.

Meanwhile in Norway, fascist child-killer Anders Breivik is still turning his trial into a grotesque circus. The court has paid far too high a price to get him to talk about what he actually did. He does seem to have offered a bit of leverage, he will aparently do "anything" to avoid being committed. His sanity is questioned apparently to discredit him, and maybe it does to some, but then I would guess most people are against mass murder already. Breivik is sane. Questioning his sanity actually lets him off the hook, lets the whole system of state racism off the hook and denies what should be the obvious fact: he did what he did because he is a fascist. His brutal rampage was fascism in action.

But a bit of good news from Britain to end on. The BNP is in turmoil and probably irreversable decline. The EDL meanwhile is going through serious doldrums. The nazis attempted to hold a demonstration in Brighton this weekend. Though they had heavy police protection (including horses and tear gas) they had a miserable day, outnumbered 10 to 1 and hounded every step of the way. Well done to all involved.

Alert

It's only one poll, almost equidistant between general elections, but for the time being the UK Independence Party has replaced the (fast disappearing) Liberal Democrats as Britain's 3rd party. These voters are being attracted overwhelmingly from the Tory party. This means one thing. There are several million people in Britain for whom this government is not right-wing enough; there isn't enough union bashing, not enough service cutting, too many kids in education, employment or training, grannies are too warm in the winter, the sick and disabled are getting too much care.

This is also probably a Breivik bounce. The normally not-great Jonathan Freedland of the Guardian has got it spot on here, about the unfolding catastrophe of the Breivik trial:

My Guardian colleague Vikram Dodd, who covered that London trial, was struck when he heard a Radio 5 Live phone-in this week that was regularly interrupted by snippets from Breivik's statement. "The grammar of the coverage was as if this was the chancellor giving his budget," says Dodd.More than one caller to that programme, while quick to insist they disagreed with Breivik's methods, did rather think the Norwegian had a point about multiculturalism run riot. "I can understand where this guy's coming from," said Tom from Dover. Several readers of a Guardian article sought to post comments in the same vein, calling for "a complete stop of immigration from Muslim countries" and suchlike. To listen to it, you'd think Breivik had simply wanted to start a debate, that he'd perhaps written a provocative pamphlet for Demos, rather than committed an act of murderous cruelty.
This is the backbone of (potential) British fascism beginning to flex (a fascist party in Britain will come, if we are not vigilant and active, in part from a party like the UK Independence Party lurching rightward). I warn you, there will be mass-murdering fascists in Britain soon.

Two trials...

One just ending, one beginning. Coming to a close the trial of Alfie Meadows and co. In my opinion reading the court reports you can see the defence has been excellent. This is a most important case; aggressive and egregiously political policing was used against the student movement of November/December 2010, the first mass movement against enforced austerity, a movement which was causing the government to falter, the coalition to come apart.

If the imprisonment and battery of children and young adults is allowed to stand, if it is deemed to be 'proportionate policing', as the Commander on the day described it, it will be a dark day for us all. I fear for the people on trial. The business end of the state urgently needs to sweep through London, make it a happy place for capitalists of the world to enjoy their Olympics. The state would think nothing of sacrificing young lives to this end. In my opinion if Alfie Meadows is found guilty we will all have to watch out for each other. If Alfie Meadows, who nearly died at the hands of the police, can be sent down for violent disorder, they can come for any of us.

Just beginning, the trial of fascist child murderer Anders Breivik. He did it. He killed 77 people, mostly teenagers at a youth camp. He does not deny it. If he is allowed to turn the trial into a political exposition, if his 'self-defence' argument is given any credence we will be in deep trouble. This is an important political event. There is great responsibility on the prosecution. If they get it wrong we could be facing the prospect of Breivikite attacks across the continent.

Alert!

Well, the first part you already know; London is being turned into a giant barracks:

Security officials are exploiting the Olympics as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to multiply and militarise their weapons stocks, laminating another layer on to the surveillance state. The Games justify a security architecture to prevent terrorism, but that architecture can double to suppress or intimidate acts of political dissent. The Olympic Charter actually prohibits political activism, stating, "no kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted in any Olympic sites, venues or other areas". What "other areas" means is open to broad interpretation. So despite Olympics human-rights rhetoric, the charter dictates – if indirectly – that local authorities squelch political activism. On cue, London police recently vowed to scour social media to sniff out any organised protests or disruptions.

The Olympics will militarise London, with surface-to-air missiles at the ready, a Royal Navy battleship moored offshore, and soldiers on patrol. After initially estimating 10,000 security guards would suffice, the London organising committee determined more than double that number would be required. The ministry of defence is filling the gap with about 13,500 military personnel, 4,000 more than are currently based in Afghanistan. Not placated, the US declared it will send its own security to London, including 500 FBI agents.

Enjoy the Olympics, OR ELSE! Do you reckon these provisions will be removed after the games are over? It'll be interesting because the word on the grapevine is the EDL are planning another close encounter of the third reich in East London this August, Walthamstow, apparently, which is an Olympic borough. What're the odds the state will make an exception, again, for the fascists?

If you want to head off that threat you can start by letting everyone know about it. London was, is and always should be a nazi free zone. The next thing you can do is make Luton a nazi free zone, May 5th, national counter-demonstration against the EDL. The last time the master race went there their friends in the police turned the centre of Luton into a ghost town. Lets try to keep it open this time, open to all, except the fascists.

That nazi moment - 2012

They're coming thick and fast too. Join the army, see the world, get exotic sexual diseases, shoot brown people and... whoa! Is that the SS flag behind you? Apparently it's not a reference to Hitler's Schutzstaffel but the scout snipers... and if you believe that you probably swallowed the one about weapons of mass destruction.

Who've have thought inciting people to torture, maim and kill people from another country would have led to this? Dun, dun, duh!

Elsewhere in fascism

The EDL's women's division (known as the EDL Angels - eww) were due to hold a demonstration outside Downing Street. Judging by the pictures their women's division is rather small and dominated by poorly-disguised transvestites. Look at them... don't they just look like angels...? Did I say angels? I meant violent fascists.

The weird world of nazis

Or it's really is a mad, mad, mad, mad reich... Last night Panorama broadcast another show about the British Nazi Party. It was generally instructive; professional fraud, amateur kidnapping, lies and general nastiness (what, no solidarity among the master race?). The climactic scene was fittingly menacing and bizarre. The reporter managed to secure a meeting to put various accusations to Nick Griffin. He was led a merry dance round various carparks of Greater Leicester by BNP security men until they reached a hotel. Once inside their furher read out a brief, whacky, paranoid statement in front of some cameras before hot-footing, leaving his goons to surround and intimidate the reporter and his crew.

There was only one problem, the documentary deliberately left aside the issue of racism and fascism. There is no apart-from-the-violent-racism with the BNP. You cannot interview loonies like Mark Collett (Mark "AIDS is a friendly disease because blacks, drug users and gays have it" Collett) like they're just members of the public... Unless, of course, you're a BBC reporter.

A CiF post that ACTUALLY suggests we should "let the racists march"

For some reason Deborah Orr has stuck in my mind. Ever since, years and years ago, I saw her on BBC Breakfast News in a small panel discussion debating the sexualisation of children. Forgetting, for a moment, that it wasn't Newsnight Review, Orr opined:

"There are some children's clothes being made with words like 'fuck' printed on them".

It was quite a while ago, I am communicating the gist of what she said. Oh the presenters were sorry for the unforeseen profanity. What they forgot was to ask: Really? Are there actually children's clothes out there with the word (or words like) 'fuck' printed on them? Really? Actually? Are you sure?

Anyway, preamble over, Deborah Orr doesn't like lefty marches but doesn't seem to mind far right ones. Why?

I had given up by the time of the million-strong march against Iraq in February 2003, having become too cheesed off on previous marches. That's a shame, I guess, because by all accounts that march was different in character, the concerned citizens greatly outnumbering the usual suspects. But, on my last anti-war march, I'd been stuck behind a group of young men who appeared passionately to believe that 9/11 had been engineered by "the Jews".

Really? That's pretty serious (although you have to admit [two] million-strong political manifestations by their very nature attract all kinds of people). Who were these people?

A "broad church" is one thing.

No, seriously, who were they? Any idea?

A conspiracy-theorist lunatic fringe is another.

It would be good to know. As a serious journalist you wouldn't just want to be casting wild aspersions here. Did you stop to find out who these young men were?

It was all so unpleasant that I peeled off, and marched over Lambeth Bridge to Chez Gerard, and steak frites instead.

So, no idea, no need to have an idea, lefties tolerate unidentified racist conspiracy nuts but not Deborah Orr. Shame on them!

Meanwhile:

I was relieved too, when a huge police presence stopped Saturday's "static protest" by the English Defence League from developing into another kind of confrontation, this time against those who abhor the EDL. Viewing protest as a way to confront the state, and the police, is not constructive. Viewing protest as a way to challenge other citizens, whose mainstream views you do not agree with, is even less so.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, actively opposing the EDL is as bad as supporting them; and when the Normandy landings happened I bet there were people tutting at the Allied invasion too! Also, it makes you wonder what organised protest is for. You can't challenge the state, you can't challenge civil society; since it was taken off the air you can't even Challenge Anneka (there's a reference for you). So, got the message? Deborah Orr doesn't want you to oppose fascist manifestations.

Yet, I was still appalled that the EDL march was banned.

Let the racists march through your neighbourhood because:

Banning groups or their activities, without evidence that they are conspiring to break the law, or encourage others to do so, just feeds the group's feeling that what they have to say is so important...

Could you make Tommy Robinson more self-important? I doubt it. Besides, it's not as if there isn't weighty evidence showing the EDL are about bringing racist violence to our streets. They attack mosques, and have done so and threatened to do so on numerous occasions. This is not exactly inconsistent with their ideology. Numerous of their members are also in the fascist BNP. They frequently attack members of the public, usually but not exclusively brown skinned people. They attack Hindu temples, trade union demonstrations and public meetings.

I could go on. The point is wisemen and fools knows the EDL didn't want to come to Tower Hamlets to go shopping in Canary Wharf, dine out in Brick Lane or go clubbing at 93 Feet East.

Never mind anti-war demos, Comment Is Free is definitely a broad church.

Well done, anti-fascists!

Well done everyone who participated in yesterday's anti-fascist activity; from the thousands of people blocking Whitechapel Road to the RMT shutting down stations the EDL wanted to 'muster' in. I'm even warming slightly to Peter Tatchell who, shit placard aside, was down at Aldgate East crossroads.

What have we learned? Well, I think it's that mass mobilisation is right and good. Why should anyone run and hide when the EDL come to their borough or town? Whose streets? Our streets! And they damn well were yesterday. We marched in Tower Hamlets, not the nazis.

But there are some who won't learn or are, perhaps, too worried about protecting the Labour Party's left flank. We should not leave it to the police. Why? Because the police don't think the EDL are violent right wingers and, according to one copper, Muslims should open a line of dialogue with them.

Outrageous!

Be in no doubt, if you reach out a hand to the EDL, if you even so much as get within arms length of them, they will try to burn you with lighter fluid.
