LolOfficer

A Sussex police officer chased himself after his suspicious activity was registered on CCTV. He followed himself for twenty minutes before he was told of the mistake. It's lucky they found out before he caught himself, pinned his own body to the ground and pumped eleven bullets into his head.

The British ruling class

The Savile affair is gaining even more momentum:

Labour MP Tom Watson has said police must investigate claims of a "powerful paedophile ring" linked to a previous prime minister's "senior adviser" and Parliament...
Mr Watson said an evidence file collected by the police to convict paedophile Peter Righton in 1992 "contains clear intelligence of a widespread paedophile ring".
"One of its members boasts of his links to a senior aide of a former prime minister, who says he could smuggle indecent images of children from abroad," he said.
"The leads were not followed up, but if the files still exist, I want to ensure that the Metropolitan Police secure the evidence, re-examine it and investigate clear intelligence suggesting a powerful paedophile network linked to Parliament and No 10."
David Cameron said it was a "very difficult and complex case" and he was "not entirely sure" which former prime minister Mr Watson was referring to.

Now, don't be coy, David, it's one of two possible Prime Ministers, and one of the possible Prime Ministers hosted Jimmy Savile at their country residence every Christmas for eleven years (not that that's incriminating - I'm just saying it can't be that "difficult and complex" to work out).

Add all this to the Hillsborough cover-up, phone hacking, rate fixing, repeated deaths in police custody and, what, is the ruling class in this country just one giant 'ring', a syndicate of mobster perverts? Don't mess with their boat races, mofo, because if you do you're going down.

Something that may interest you...

Speaking of police and anti-fascist demos. Two police officers have been summonsed by York Magistrates on a charge of perverting the course of justice:

Insp Robert Cantrell, 39, a member of Greater Manchester Police’s elite Tactical Aid Unit, was praised for his bravery after last year’s riots. But the M.E.N can reveal he has been summonsed to appear before magistrates following an investigation into policing of a demonstration by the far-right English Defence League.Pc Alan Glover, 31, a member of the same TAU team, has also been ordered to appear at York magistrates court to face a charge of perverting the course of justice...The IPCC probe, which lasted 16 months, investigated ‘the apparent difference between the footage and the account given by officers which resulted in criminal charges’ as well as the level of force used in Mr Clough’s arrest...A CPS spokesman said: "Both have been summonsed to appear before York magistrates court on charges of perverting the course of justice."The footage - shot by Granada TV - emerged after Mr Clough was charged.Police admitted that the video ‘appears to show a man being inappropriately struck during his arrest’.
The footage appears to shows an officer taking hold of Mr Clough by the neck.A second officer wearing a riot helmet and uniform, apparently hits him once in the jaw.
Yep, and this is the footage:
It's good to have the cops on the back foot but don't hold out too much hope, this is the British 'justice' system we're talking about. These are coppers. Odds are they'll be back on the streets and beating people up before you can say "there's no intelligence to suggest the EDL march will result in violence".

Today in London

You may not have known but today in London was the monthly Critical Mass bike ride, and overwhelmingly peaceful protest that has gone on for years. If you support the Olympics you support this: the police pepper spraying and assaulting a disabled man on a tricycle.

Piggy parade

Or: whose police? Murdoch's police! The Police Federation marched through London to protect their members privileges, and they are privileges. The mainstream press would like to connect today's public sector strikes with the federation march. The police are not workers, they don't see themselves as workers, they are not clamouring to be part of the TUC and they did not ask for solidarity from the unions, let alone the left. Nor should we have offered it. If you stand with the police you are standing against every kid being harassed on a council estate, against every student hauled before a court on a trumped up charge and against every family trying to get justice for someone killed in police custody. As far as we're concerned no cut to the police is deep enough. The entire force should be disbanded (and before anyone goes "ah-ha" there is the matter of what kind of state do we put in its place, but for now: Disband the Met).

Two trials...

One just ending, one beginning. Coming to a close the trial of Alfie Meadows and co. In my opinion reading the court reports you can see the defence has been excellent. This is a most important case; aggressive and egregiously political policing was used against the student movement of November/December 2010, the first mass movement against enforced austerity, a movement which was causing the government to falter, the coalition to come apart.

If the imprisonment and battery of children and young adults is allowed to stand, if it is deemed to be 'proportionate policing', as the Commander on the day described it, it will be a dark day for us all. I fear for the people on trial. The business end of the state urgently needs to sweep through London, make it a happy place for capitalists of the world to enjoy their Olympics. The state would think nothing of sacrificing young lives to this end. In my opinion if Alfie Meadows is found guilty we will all have to watch out for each other. If Alfie Meadows, who nearly died at the hands of the police, can be sent down for violent disorder, they can come for any of us.

Just beginning, the trial of fascist child murderer Anders Breivik. He did it. He killed 77 people, mostly teenagers at a youth camp. He does not deny it. If he is allowed to turn the trial into a political exposition, if his 'self-defence' argument is given any credence we will be in deep trouble. This is an important political event. There is great responsibility on the prosecution. If they get it wrong we could be facing the prospect of Breivikite attacks across the continent.

Chilling...

From evidence given in the Alfie Meadows trial:
Mansfield [for the defence] questioned [Commander] Johnson’s tactics once again, asking him if he understood the difference between ‘high-profile’ and ‘low-profile’ policing to which Johnson replied ‘I use proportionate policing’. Mansfield referred to Johnson’s handling of the G20 protest and the way ‘thing went wrong there’. Johnson said he didn’t accept things had gone wrong, to which Mansfield responded ‘somebody died there’. ‘They did, yes,’ replied Johnson.

You have to bear in mind this is probably not a gaffe (even though it should look bad to any right-thinking person). This is Total Policing. Things did not 'go wrong' at the G20, at least not for the police, who demonstrated their power and, through that, the power of the British capitalist class. Somebody died, but people do that all the time. The point was people were made that little bit more afraid of expressing their politics.

Things did not go wrong for the police on Westminster Bridge either, where several thousand young people were corralled in sub-zero temperatures and Hillsborough-like conditions by commander Johnson's men. It was revenge for the humiliation inflicted on the police by the students invasion of Millbank Tower.

Like bad pennies in broken jar

They just keep turning up! ‎"Make sure you do a lot with your 60 grand because you're not gonna get it no more bruv..." Well done the lad for standing up to racist bullies. He is an absolute hero! Take down PC Alex MacFarlane, racist PC Alex MacFarlane, violent racist PC Alex MacFarlane, take him down, all the way. While we're on the subject DISBAND THE MET!

Disband the Met

Cops with guns on an NHS demo. Yes, an NHS demo, the 17th of March, 2012. And, yes, they clubbed demonstrators then prevented ambulances from getting to the injured. Oh, the banter! Welcome to Total Policing in Olympic year.

The police are a gang, a criminal gang, no more no less. We should start using the slogan "Disband the Met". They kill, they maim, they injure and intimidate, they bribe, they run drugs, they organise blacklists. They are the paramilitary wing of the government.

Disband the Met.

Naomi Wolf on her recent arrest

Link here. The incident began at an evening dinner event called Game Changers 2011 - a group of OWS supporters wanted to speak to Governor Andrew Cuomo.

On our exit, I saw that the protesters had been cordoned off by a now-massive phalanx of NYPD cops and pinned against the far side of the street – far away from the event they sought to address.

I went up and asked them why. They replied that they had been informed that the Huffington Post event had a permit that forbade them to use the sidewalk. I knew from my investigative reporting on NYC permits that this was impossible: a private entity cannot lease the public sidewalks; even film crews must allow pedestrian traffic. I asked the police for clarification – no response.

I went over to the sidewalk at issue and identified myself as a NYC citizen and a reporter, and asked to see the permit in question or to locate the source on the police or event side that claimed it forbade citizen access to a public sidewalk. Finally a tall man, who seemed to be with the event, confessed that while it did have a permit, the permit did allow for protest so long as we did not block pedestrian passage.

I thanked him, returned to the protesters, and said: "The permit allows us to walk on the other side of the street if we don't block access. I am now going to walk on the public sidewalk and not block it. It is legal to do so. Please join me if you wish." My partner and I then returned to the event-side sidewalk and began to walk peacefully arm in arm, while about 30 or 40 people walked with us in single file, not blocking access.

Then a phalanx of perhaps 40 white-shirted senior offices descended out of seemingly nowhere and, with a megaphone (which was supposedly illegal for citizens to use), one said: "You are unlawfully creating a disruption. You are ordered to disperse." I approached him peacefully, slowly, gently and respectfully and said: "I am confused. I was told that the permit in question allows us to walk if we don't block pedestrian access and as you see we are complying with the permit."

If you want an illustration of the fear and loathing in in every copper's (reptile) heart:

He gave me a look of pure hate. "Are you going to back down?" he shouted. I stood, immobilised, for a moment. "Are you getting out of my way?" I did not even make a conscious decision not to "fall back" – I simply couldn't even will myself to do so, because I knew that he was not giving a lawful order and that if I stepped aside it would be not because of the law, which I was following, but as a capitulation to sheer force.

This is the point. If the police break the law what do you do? The police are a legalised crime syndicate, an armed gang employed to solve rich men's problems with force.

Ms Wolf was then arrested.

The police are now telling my supporters that the permit in question gave the event managers "control of the sidewalks". I have asked to see the permit but still haven't been provided with it – if such a category now exists, I have never heard of it; that, too, is a serious blow to an open civil society. What did I take away? Just that, unfortunately, my partner and I became exhibit A in a process that I have been warning Americans about since 2007: first they come for the "other" – the "terrorist", the brown person, the Muslim, the outsider; then they come for you – while you are standing on a sidewalk in evening dress, obeying the law.

The purpose of the War on Terror was not just to shift the balance abroad but at home as well. In many countries government agencies now have sweeping, ill-defined powers. Often you need a permit for most basic aspects of political activity (or if not the cop in question takes it for granted you do) - not so much different to Imperial Germany, where a policeman would sit on every platform in every public meeting to make sure the Kaiser wasn't insulted. We can't all be famous, well-to-do writers, there is only safety in numbers. We must exercise our rights or risk losing them, and at a time of greatest need.

Greater Manchester Police vs Democracy

For two weeks running council officials backed up by coppers have broken up campaigning stalls in the centre of Manchester. By an amazing coincidence the Tory party is due to hold its annual conference there in the first week of October.

Look at them, a murderous group of cut throats if ever you saw them. But our Brave Bobbies soon put a stop to their shennanigans!

... Suspicion of attempting to wield an opinion without a licence.

And they weren't the only group attacked.

Deaths in custody update

There have been three in the last week. Two of the people to have died at the police's hands were men in their twenties, not middle-aged alcoholic paper vendors, so no pretending they were just going to die somehow anyway, y'know, like. There was also this:

Armed police stopped two young girls aged 15 and nine in Birmingham last week.

The police claimed the eldest of the sisters fitted the description of an armed robber.

Two arms, two legs and a head... no gun though, but anyone could have made that mistake...

In fact she was on her way to collect her GCSE results from her nearby school.

Their mother, a youth worker, said, “This is the sort of thing which starts riots."

Indeed. It's amazing, isn't it? Hundreds of deaths - still no convictions.

One false move

Nina Power is in today's Grauniad. She makes some well-aimed points against the 30 day ban on political marches in 5 London boroughs (sparked by the EDL requesting to march along Whitechapel Road in Tower Hamlets).

Calling for a ban on the EDL march has its attractions. But there is a question about who is being asked to impose a ban, and what consequences a ban might have beyond the resolution of an immediate situation. It is increasingly clear that the coalition government is doing its best to punish protesters of all stripes. Students who protested against fee rises last year were subjected to kettling and charged by mounted police, while many are still being dragged through the courts on serious counts; 30 UK Uncut protesters are still being "symbolically" prosecuted for peacefully occupying Fortnum & Mason on 26 March; and anyone who attended the 30 June strike would have been aware of police "snatch and grab" tactics used against anyone they had decided were potential troublemakers.

There's only one problem, the headline: Let the EDL racists march. I am aware she may not have written that headline (example whatever you might think of Pulp, they don't matter now more than ever), but it's important because it changes the whole tenor of the argument. Socialists are never abstractly for freedom of speech. We are never abstractly for anything. We deal (or should deal) in concrete matters, actual questions. I would be quite happy if the state banned the EDL (and the EDL alone) from marching in Tower Hamlets. I would be quite happy if the EDL would be prevented from assembling. I would be over the moon if the EDL was forcibly dissolved and any Continuity-EDLs prevented from forming. The trouble is these are completely unrealistic demands to make of a bourgeois state, one that, as the author rightly points out, is working tirelessly to prevent any left-wing challenge emerging to its austerity programme.

We don't call for a ban on fascist marches because, at the very least, there is a history of those calls rebounding on the left. We call for mass opposition on the streets. But, in this context, suggesting we 'let the EDL racists march', whoever wrote it, means letting the Tory trolls out to drool over the CiF site (fweedom of speesh!). The argument is immediately shifted to the right.

[Roobin's note] the assembly point and time for Saturday's UAF demo has changed to the corner of Whitechapel Road and Vallance Road near the East London Mosque at 11am (Nearest tube Whitechapel).

Please spread the word.

From Salford to the Hindu Kush, we're all just uppity natives

Hat-tip to Snowball:

The officer, based at Salford, said to Prince Harry: "In 20 years of policing, last Tuesday was the most frightening thing I've ever encountered."

Prince Harry replied: "I think it's fantastic what you guys have done to keep a lid on it. It seems really quiet out there in Salford now."

The 26-year-old royal, who took a day out from helicopter training with the Army Air Corps at Wattisham Airfield in Suffolk to travel to Salford, told the officers: "You all did a fantastic job on the night and it's great to see Manchester and Salford back on its feet.

"As an army officer I really respect the work you guys do and I can't praise your bravery high enough."

As an army officer...? Hmm... It's quiet out there now, maybe a little too quiet, if you know what I mean? You never know with these Salfordian insurgents. They're out there... still... watching... They could be watching us right now... waiting... plotting...

Policing - a lottery that rewards malicious negligence

John Yates, assistant commissioner, lead counter-terrorism officer, has resigned as a result of the phone hacking scandal. He is being replaced for the time being by Cressida Dick. Ms Dick, we know, has prior experience, helping keep London safe from the scourge of Brazilian electricians. For all she knows it could happen again. If it does certain newspapers will be no doubt be on hand to spread police smears and lies.
