Some of which may have been sung by Wrong Lyrics Christina.

Cut my life into pizza/This is my plastic fork
It's not fair to deny me/The crosseyed bear that you gave to me
I love rock and roll/So smoke another dime with 2Pac's baby
This ain't a sea/It's a god damn arse face
Let's pee in the corner/Let's pee in the spotlight
The shoes on my feet/Alf Garnett
Hold me closer/Tony Danza
The ants are my friends/They're blowing in the wind
You're gonna have to face it/You're a dick in a glove
We gotta hold on to what we got/It doesn't make a difference if we're naked or not
Scuse me while I kiss this guy
She's got a chicken to ride
Out on the windy/windy moor/sweet Roland rolled in brie
Must be talking to a ninja
Scare a moose/Scare a moose/Will you do the fandango
Beelezbub has a devil for a sideboard
This is the dawning of the age of aquariums
Holding back the ears
Bunny's too tight to mention
I left my brains down in Africa
Midnight after your wasted/Take a camel to bed
Israeli men/Hallelujah
Here we are now/In containers

Thoughts for the Brain: more on the Drowned Girl

As an historical figure Rosa Luxemburg has a negligible presence. She left nothing behind in the way of a new and different life. She founded no movement, let alone any state. Even Leon Trotsky, with his meagre, humiliating end, claims his place as a fallen Titan of the twentieth century.

Her pull as an icon, a figure of ideology is much greater. Those who encounter her find her bewitching (a loaded adjective to use for a woman, but it’s to the point). The Drowned Girl song, by Bertolt Brecht is a good example. It was taken from a poem written by Brecht in the aftermath of the Spartacus Days and reworked into a later play. Though not directly about her I think it’s still telling she was made into the drowned girl.

In the month before the revolution that toppled the Kaiser and ended the war, political prisoners were released as the pressure rose. Her jailers only dared release her on November the 8th, the night before the movement took Berlin. No photos exist (as far as I know) of her final two months. She was forty-eight but appeared frail and had completely white hair. Luxemburg is simply not remembered as old. She is forever a young woman, new to the party but besting the elders and generally shaking things up.

She was a woman who thrived in a male-dominated environment. Even now people tend to be familiar when referring to her. It goes Marx, Engels, Lenin, Trotsky… Rosa, Red Rosa, Bloody Rosa, but almost always Rosa. She was a martyr too, to a gang of men no less.

The fact she has no concrete legacy gives her little definition. It means she can be pressed into many meanings. There is a feminist Rosa Luxemburg, an anarchist Rosa Luxemburg even an anti-communist Rosa Luxemburg (it’s a difficult job, but you can press her theses on the Russian revolution into Cold War service).

Luxemburg is the meaning of her message, the value and detail of which is often overlooked. She is a true icon in the McLuhanite sense.

Song for a lost world...

David Bowie singing (albeit obliquely) about the murder of Rosa Luxemburg. Counterfactuals are a borderline science at best. Nevertheless it's entirely possible that the bludgeoning of a middle aged woman set humanity on its current road to doom. Even at this late stage we can choose another path, but we're running out of time.

Plebgate...

The current headline sensation is the Fucking Plebs story. The interesting thing about the fallout from Andrew Mitchell’s outburst, apart from the fact that the Tories look down on everyone, even the people they pay handsomely to do their dirty work, is the fact that a senior MP got away with swearing at a police officer.

Despite the debatableprovisions of the 1986 Public Order Act, generally speaking it doesn’t take much for an ordinary person to be arrested, for example the Oxford University student taken to court for “remarks likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress”. He asked a mounted officer if he realised his horse was gay.

There is one other thing to mention about swearing. It is intimately connected with class society. Here’s Leon Trotsky on the matter(weighted toward post-revolutionary Russia, but with some general applicability).

Broadly speaking there are four categories of swearing, filth, sex/sexuality, race and blasphemy, translated into social terms they are contempt, oppression and bigotry. The fact that we might feel the need to swear, often without realising what we are doing, indicates how despite our best efforts we still take aspects of the prevailing ideology on board. This also shows the other point about ideology that needs hamming home, the prevailing ideology is such that we do not recognise it for what it is, at least not until we come into conflict with it.

Swearing is something that will wither away with a classless society. We can do our best in the meantime to be aware of its origins and significance to counter its more pernicious effects, racism, sexism and so on.

Thoughts for the brain: assassinations?

Has anyone written a study of assassination? The culture of public slaying seems to wax and wane. Of course it is connected past civic culture and levels of social conflict. But were there more assassination attempts in revolutionary Russia than in revolutionary Germany, I’m not sure?

John Lennon’s killing was the last of the wave of post-war American assassinations. There are conspiracy theories about his death, they’re amongst the flimsiest out there, and that’s saying something. On the face of it his death was enigmatic, almost meaningless. Mark Chapman spent some time in New York before killing John Lennon. He watched David Bowie perform in the Elephant Man three days before and even took a picture of him leaving the theatre. He could have killed almost anyone in the public eye (Lennon was the easiest to find apparently).

Chapman’s apparent mental delusion stemmed from pronounced childhood sensitivity, exposure to psychedelic drugs and conversion to Presbyterianism. But a crucial factor was surely The Beatles music and their place in the 60s counter culture. It has been well explained by Ian MacDonald, The Beatles lyrics to begin with were deeply simple expressions of the music, happy, sad, excited etc. Under Bob Dylan’s influence particularly, their lyrics became more personal and more topical but, mostly a pot-pourri of fragments and allusions; this engagingly jumbled approach to writing encouraged clue hunters, pattern-finders and pseuds to pour over song lyrics. In the heady atmosphere of the 60s the fascination grew into rumours and outlandish theories, not least the Paul Is Dead theory.

Mark Chapman was apparently enraged by Lennon’s various blasphemies, in music and in print, angry enough to kill him. But he was one of many people to fixate on The Beatles. I remember reading in a Q Magazine interview once George Harrison telling of the time he bumped into the pilot who used to fly The Beatles round America on tours. He said one thing they never told the band, the plane was frequently riddled with bullet holes. If it seems strange that Chapman would harbour the urge to kill ten years after Lennon left The Beatles and five years after he stepped out of public life, well… it is odd. This is part of why conspiracy theories exist, to rationalise the parts of life that seem to be deterministic chaos. John Lennon was alive and well then he was dead: why? Any reasonable explanation will probably die with Mark Chapman.

It is a small wonder more pop stars and, more broadly, celebrities have not died this way.

Talk bollocks... TO THE EXTREME!

That's how to relate to to the kids. There are too many stories of Tory ministers/MPs/supporters talking offensive rubbish almost to count, but this is a gem. Damian Collins, another of the class of 2010, reckoned (on Channel 4 no less) that:

1. Seeking further education shows a lack of motivation.
2. "A businessman" he knows (unattributed quote passed off as sociological analysis) said they would rather have a 16 year old train as an unpaid apprentice for three years so they can start... at minimum wage. You've got to have a dream...
3. If it's difficult paying for transport to get to job interviews, well, you know what to do, busk!
Now, has Damian Collins considered that maybe someone struggling with bus or train fares is going to struggle to scrape together the shrapnel to afford an instrument? Has he? Has he really? Perhaps he wants them to beatbox or sing four-part harmonies? Do the kids of today where to find out about busking by-laws? Are they motivated enough?

He couldn't just be talking utter fucking bollocks, could he?

Bozo bites!

I’ll crush strikers” vows Boris Johnson. “I’ll crush them like police crush football fans” he added… OK, I added that last bit, but I just wanted to remind you… Boris Johnson lied in print about the victims of the Hillsborough Disaster, and he’s very, very sorry… that he got caught out (alright, I added that bit too – but it’s almost certainly the truth).

Bozo Johnson’s calling for new anti-union laws, the headline being raising the threshold for successful strike ballots to 50% of the membership, as opposed to 50% of those who take part. Bear in mind secret ballots to legalise strike action were introduced in order to destroy more direct forms of union democracy, demobilise members and put power in the hands of union full-timers.

Boris Johnson was not elected by 50% of the London electorate. Are there any MPs who were elected by 50% of their constituency? I doubt it. This government is allowed to cause “endless buggeration” (Johnson’s phrase) and even destroy vital public services, but what’s good enough for them is not good enough for Britain’s unions apparently (who, when they do occasionally grind into action, more often than not it’s to fight the government’s demolition of public services).  Johnson’s plans also include strike-bans in various sectors and provisions for minimum service levels in others.  If this were to be put into action it would be Armageddon for effective legal trade unionism in Britain, back to the Tolpuddle days, and wouldn’t that suit the Tories.

But, also, what is this based on, this new proposed onslaught on our rights? Do the unions cause “endless” problems for our Tory overlords? Hardly. There is a weird right-wing obsession with the RMT. They’re always on strike, especially on the underground and by always we mean for a few days once every couple of years or so in various sectors.

While we may disagree with the union’s tactics, they are the union’s prerogative and the RMT is certainly more active than most unions. Even so, this is hardly a wave of insurrection. The economy is not in the doldrums because of trade unions.

We are seeing the rise of truthiness in British politics:

Truthiness is a quality characterizing a "truth" that a person claims to know intuitively "from the gut" or because it "feels right" without regard to evidencelogicintellectual examination, or facts.

What matters these days is not logic, reason or the outcome of rigorous debate. The lack of a continual opponent, however wobbly and uncertain, seems to have made the ruling class soft in the head. Except in America it’s a very effective tactic. Remove reality from politics and you’re free to rig the terms society lives by, imagination is the only limit. The Tories have an agenda. They do not expect to win another election. They are trying to fix the terms of mainstream politics for a generation by rushing through the maddest, most provocative right-wing agenda possible.

Expect a trade union destruction bill very soon.

For your information

Norman Bettinson, the man who ran the Hillsborough police 'liason' unit that spread ugly lies about Liverpool fans after the disaster, has also been in charge of PREVENT, and Vice Chair of ACPO's Terrorism and Allied Matters committee. This:

puts him at the heart of state snooping against Muslim, Kurdish and Tamil communities, as well as 'counter-terror' strategies against LWX (left wing extremists) and anarchists.

In his PREVENT role he has shown evidence of some rather unpleasant views. When the Met was found guilty and fined in a corporate prosecution for the killing of Jean Charles de Menezes, he described it as "a triumph for health and safety, a lucrative new territory for lawyers, a disaster for common sense."

He has also claimed that that schoolchildren as young as 13 are being groomed for terrorism, said that it will “probably take 20 years” to prevent the “infection” of extremism spreading within Britain’s borders", and blamed Muslim communities for not doing enough to prevent terrorism. He's not averse to a bit of the high life. In July he was criticised for spending £300,000 of his force's money on seven high performance executive cars for the 'personal and professional use' of senior officers, including himself, despite moaning on about police spending cuts. His crusade against 'all forms of extremism' has also taken him on all-expenses paid trips to Pakistan, Bangladesh and Abu Dhabi.

It's alright for some, isn't it?

Thoughts for the Brain... oh dear....

I have just discovered a rather brilliant blog, called Pushing Ahead ofthe Dame, a song-by-song dissertation about the life and times of David Bowie . It is a fascinating subject, apt as well. Bowie hasn’t sung on stage for six years and hasn’t released a new album in nine. At sixty-five years young Bowie’s public life may well be over, a shame in one sense because he did make good albums during the 90s and 00s, but let him rest and enjoy life if he wants.

It’s not like there isn’t plenty of music to enjoy, and the blog (to become a two-volume book) goes through it in fine detail. Typically we’ve arrived at our subject late, after the 70s peak. The blog is currently marking the fag-end of the Tin Machine era, so there’s still 1.Outside,Earthling and Heathen to go.

I’ve waxed occasionally coherent about Bowie before, but here are some observations:

Bowie, art and reality

Bowie’s art shows up the tricky dialectic of the particular and the universal, closely allied with notions of personal versus impersonal, realist versus imaginative. Pop music in one sense is a dialogue between ideas of authenticity and artifice. At one point Bowie was recording Bruce Springsteen songs and borrowing members of his band. You could not get more immediately disparate characters, two more disparate albums than Greetings from Ashbury Park and Diamond Dogs.

I would say authenticity is generally held in higher regard. The 90s, for example, were all about playing it straight, keeping it real, representing this or that area etc. It stems probably from pop’s origins in the blues. We’re used to the fact that reality TV is anything but realistic. But we’re liable to forget that straight-talking narrative blues songs were often folk compositions performed by outlandish characters. Bruce Springsteen lived his songs, which were constructs, projections of reality. Reality is equally a construct (though no less real for it). No one lives a truly ‘normal’ life. We get to the universal though the particular, and there’s little as particular in mass culture as particular as David Bowie and his strange fascinations.

Bowie and politics

Any kind of discussion of David Bowie and politics must include fascism. Of course there is the rider that even at his most ‘fascist’ Bowie was not the kind of fascist we know and loathe. Even his strongest endorsement of fascism “Britain could benefit from a fascist leader”, rank though it was, was qualified and hedged during the interview it was taken from, not to mention probably a provocation as well.

His undoubted obsession with fascist imagery and manipulation, came out of two very sixties pursuits, Nietzsche and Gnosticism.

Nietzsche made a comeback in the second half of the last century, after being strongly associated with the Third Reich, particularly in the theory of ubermensch. There are three theories of history. Firstly that it is the manifestation of god’s will, second the accumulated effect of class struggle and finally the result of will to power (and a fourth theory, that history is just one thing after another).

Post World War Two the first theory was discredited by centuries of scientific discovery. The second theory suffered under the effect of the Soviet Union and/or the powerful sense that western workers had been bought off. It was natural that many young people would interrogate the final theory, that of Friedrich Nietzsche. His ideas are really the end point of trying to square liberal theory, based on the unbound, atomised individual, with reality. His post-war heirs were the existentialists, the beat generation and the hippies, in struggle with the suffocating hypocrisy of the Cold War.

Gnosticism is less obvious (and was less popular) but a logical of the above fascination. In Hunky Dory the coming hippie arcadia became the rise of Homo Superior. Gnosticism, broadly speaking, is a branch of Judeo-Christian thought that suggests the fall of man was a fall from true consciousness. Human beings recover enlightenment, achieve liberation and so on through ritual and esoteric practice. This not only chimed with the hippie movement, a privileged group within straight society, built around the ritual and sacrament of LS; it was also the founding idea of the Thule Society, which was the meeting point of many senior nazi cadre, instead of benign hippies you had conquering Aryans.

If all this wasn’t well known the story of Bowie’s mid-70s flirtation with fascism, a time when many people were developing dangerous sympathies, is well known. It took the Victoria incident to break the spell. Bowie swung sharply left, making a point of stating, whenever asked, that he was not a fascist. He also abandoned the accompanying glamour and theatrics, living quietly in Europe, making minimalist albums.

Bowie and Benjamin

Go back to Walter Benjamin and his definitive statement on art:
Outmoded concepts, such as creativity and genius, eternal value and mystery – concepts whose uncontrolled… application… lead to a processing of data in the Fascist sense.
Though the music industry is a capitalist industry, therefore dedicated to the mass reproduction of art, a number of values and rituals not to mention cults still linger. The cult worship of rock stars is in itself a reaction to the music industry

The notion of pop music as a force for change still pervades, despite being based on... not much really. There is left-wing music, but there is also more than plenty of reactionary music made, politically and artistically reactionary.

David Bowie’s enduring popularity lies in his realism. It’s the kind of realism that looks at strange fascinations people have, the imaginative world that is often just as unhealthy and polluted as the real one. If the boundary between fantasy and reality was lost, well, that does happen sometimes. This is where democratic intervention happens. The British music scene veered down dark avenues in the 70s. The advent of Rock Against Racism (some of the earliest leaflets were a response to Bowie's ramblings) changed history for the better.

Postscript

Now, for SOME raisin, here's Dave from 1974:

I can has strikes?

It’s approaching conference time, and TUC leader Brendan Barber is putting out press releases about the stark condition British society is being forced to endure. There is an undeniable element of “I’m still here”, like Len McLuskey’s occasional fighting talk, and Brendan Barber’s plan, his only plan, is to ask nicely, but it is also the run up to a major demonstration: A Future That Works.

It is an A to B march, and we have been here beforeBut we cannot pull strikes out of a hat, not in our present condition. The fact that the British trade union movement seems to need a set-piece demonstration to work itself up for any kind of confrontation with the government (not forgetting how quickly these confrontations are also abandoned to apathy), should be cause for debate. I am a trade union member, not a battle hardened convenor or rep but enough of a member to know we need a change of direction.

We have been here before with mass demonstrations. We need to find a way for demonstrations to become strikes and for strikes to stick. We need what’s known as a rank and file perspective. It’s all very well saying people need confidence before we start building, but we will be forever be in the hands of the likes of Brendan Barber and Dave Prentis, the kind of leaders who would not stir themselves even if they were the last union members left alive, let alone in work. There’s nothing like starting now to build confidence.

None the less, let’s be on the October 20th demo, in large numbers. The government and
the mass media will want to pretend austerity is popular, or at least accepted, for as long
and hard as possible. A big demonstration will be another blow to the Tories.

More thinking for the brain

The Marble Hornets series is in the Found-Footage genre. Its is a relatively recent style of filmmaking, almost exclusively associated with horror, the conceit being all or a large part of the film has been made by the protagonists themselves. It is part of the general democratic urge engendered by capitalist art (albeit harnessed in a non-democratic way) of increasing depth and audience participation.

The thrill of horror and similar genres, such as war or action movies, is it puts you in the midst of the fear and fascination, up against Slender Man or the Cloverfield monster or whatever, but allows you to come through unscathed. When Found Footage works it eliminates the lingering sense that all reasonably sophisticated cinema-goers have, that there is someone behind the camera, a 3rd person, non-participant.

It is still of course a piece of artifice (and therefore, under capitalist conditions, even with the best will, it is a fraudulent democracy). The most obvious difficulty is character motivation. At what stage to the protagonists simply drop the camera and run like all normal human beings would?

The Found Footage genre is usually taken as beginning with Cannibal Holocaust in 1980. Audiences found it so real it was alleged to be a snuff film. But it really took off as a genre in the 1990s. It was in step with movements such as lo-fi (in music) and reality TV. The pursuit of authenticity, keeping it real (or appearing to) was the highest you could aspire. It’s an enduring obsession in a world where public life was perhaps until recently robbed of all co-ordinates; the post-modern age where what mattered was what worked etc. It was left to the letters page of the NME to wonder if a millionaire rapper was representing the streets or if an indie hit celebrated or denigrated working class life. Were they for real?

When we interact with mass media we usually look for the opposite of shock and thrill. When confronted with something new, e.g. the internet, as a society and as individuals, we either reject it wholesale or we try to incorporate and normalise it. If there is a future in going out to the cinema, as opposed to staying in with a movie, it’s in genre that excite, like Found Footage.

Fear and fascism

I am currently getting into the Slender Manmythos, an online phenomenon that has grown into a full-blown urban myth. It began in 2009 as an online photoshop competition to transform ordinary photos into fake paranormal photos. A character called Victor Surge made two photos of an unidentified man standing near children. He was very tall and had strange, tentacle like arms. Victor Surge added a detailed, thumbnail back story about a library fire. The legend grew from this point:

Slender Man (a.k.a Slenderman) is a mythical creature often depicted as a tall, thin figure wearing a black suit and a blank face. According to the legend, he can stretch or shorten his arms at will and has tentacle-like appendages protruding from his back. Depending on the interpretations of the myth, the creature can cause memory loss, insomnia, paranoia, coughing fits (nicknamed “slendersickness”), photograph/video distortions and can teleport at will.

The Slender Man became The Operator in an online series called MarbleHornets. Slender Man/Operator myth, though mostly bluff, is a superb creation; a tapestry of uncanny fears (at the beginning of Marble Hornets, The Operator is literally outside the house), showing that true horror is also compelling. You fear to look but you cannot turn away. I mention all this partly because I want to but also because I have been thinking more about the psychological basis of fascism.

Fascism makes no logical sense. It is a scavenger philosophy. Its class base, the middle-class, has no consistent point of view within capitalism. But fascism makes illogical sense.

It coheres into a movement on the basis of mythos. A note: the German word for uncanny is unheimlich, which in turn derives from heimlich. Heimlich has two meanings, one of which means homely, comfortable, the other secret or concealed. Fascist movements at their core are often based around esoteric, concealed knowledge.

But fascist movements are stimulated by a return of the repressed, the unheimlich. In 1930s Germany it was a combination of economic depression and the Russian Revolution: amalgamated to produce the myth of a global Jewish conspiracy, a repulsive, lunatic theory, but it founded the Third Reich.

In Britain last year there was a spasm of fear after the riots. Nobody, at least in the cities where they broke out, was surprised by what happened, but that could not suppress the horror, the sense of emergency, nothing could, not more riot police, not water cannons, not even live rounds (as I heard one woman suggest on the number 38 bus, very loudly, into her phone). Something had to be done! So the urban gentry took to the streets with their brooms.

Fear (and fascination - the enemy is always stronger and more vital) is an adrenaline shot for fascism, which can make it tremendously energetic. The repressed element, the working class in its most fearsome, elemental form, had erupted. The ruling class fosters fascist ideas so if at any stage it doubts itself, it has this paranoid, demented force in reserve.

Anti-fascism in action.

The EDL were unable to hold a rally in Walthamstow today. This may have been something to do with it. Direct action by 3,000 anti-fascists. Great day, everyone, a great day.
